Adelaide’s reputation as the “Little Wonder Down Under” is well-earned and it’s easy to see why when you discover its many charms. Sip a glass of pinot noir or cabernet while surrounded by the dreamlike scenery of the Barossa Valley or stroll through the pretty German village of Hahndorf.
We left the port and rode the bus through Adelaide. We were able to see a small port town with old buildings along the water. Many Victorian homes as we have seen in every town of Australia. We started climbing in elevation and began seeing vineyards and houses with fabulous views.
We arrived at the Cleland Wildlife Park that was located at the top of this mountain. It reminded me of the Catskill Game Farm back in New York State. Mom and dad would take us there when we were kids. I have fond memories of going when I was little and then various trips when we took my nieces and nephew. The Cleland Wildlife Park is home to over 130 species of native animals, from venomous snakes (not visiting them) to kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, wombats, emus, dingoes, Tasmanian devils, potoroos and a variety of birdlife. A large portion of the park was open space. You could walk up to the wallabies and kangaroo’s to feed or just pet them.

We arrived in the koala area just at feeding time so they were awake and alert. They hangout in the tree branches eating so we just stood and watched them. So cute you just wanted to squeeze them! It made me sad to think of all the koalas (and other animals) that have died recently in the major bush fires of Australia. We have seen signs in many of the shops saying their profits were currently going to wildlife rescue efforts.

We enjoyed our stroll through the park with a few of our friends (Al and Denise from Michigan). It was interesting to see the animals up close. We even saw a mother kangaroo with movement in her pouch. We stood and watched and suddenly there were 2 big feet coming out of her pouch. It was really funny. Off she hopped. We even made a quick video clip to send to Rosie. Tomorrow (2/24) is her 6th birthday, so we caught a kangaroo on video hopping and told her “Hoppy” Birthday from Australia. Lol!
Suddenly a loud distraction! I couldn’t really see through the treetops, but could hear a military plane. We briskly walked to an opening in the trees and could see a F-18. It was flying back and forth up the coast and then over our heads making acrobatic maneuvers. Really great to watch and hear the roaring engine as it passed over us.
It was time to head back down the hill and through Adelaide. We went through the downtown area which was very modern with tall office buildings, museums, art galleries, shops, cathedrals, green parks and much more (including the Aboriginal Cultural Gallery).

We headed back to the port and boarded the ship. What another lovely day! Good memories…
