February 20, 2023 – Moreton Island, Australia
I’m still feeling poorly so I’m asking Bob to go on tour today without me. We anchored and the tenders started taking tourists to the island. Moreton Island is just off the coast of southeastern Queensland near Brisbane. The island offers a resort day at Tangalooma Island Resort. Many passengers went there to snorkel. The island also has huge sand dunes and others went to toboggan down the dunes. Fun!
Moreton is famous for sunken shipwrecks adjacent to the resort. The ships did not wreck here, but were scuttled by the Queensland Gov’t between 1963 and 1984 to provide safe anchorage spot for recreational boat owners. Coral has now formed in and around the wrecks providing a haven for over 100 species of fish. A total of 15 vessels were sunk and it’s not hard to spot them. The iconic silhouette of ships sticking out of the ocean.
Bob went on a short tour. The weather was not the greatest but he said the glass bottom boat ride was enjoyable. The view of all the sunken ships was very interesting and I’m sure seeing the coral would have been fascinating.
