April 19, 2023 – La Palma, Canary Islands

Ut-o, guess where I had to visit this morning. Yes, the Medical Dept. I’m out of cough syrup. We’re going to make the best of the day. Although we missed our tour at our last port, we’re going to get outside, breathe some nice salty air and enjoy the sunshine.

We docked in La Palma, Canary Islands (Spain) this morning. It’s a gorgeous day and we can tell already, this island is totally different than Lanzarote. It’s still a volcanic island, but has a lot of vegetation. Just looking from our balcony, we can see several banana plantations.

Also known as La Isla bonita or The Beautiful Island. La Palma has an area of 273 square miles making it the fifth largest of the eight main Canary Islands. The highest mountain is 7,949 feet high. There is road access from sea level to the summit. Now that would be a fun drive with an incredible view. The mountain is so high, many times it’s surrounded by clouds. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture and tourism. Bananas are grown throughout the island. Other crops include the bird of paradise flowers, oranges, avocados and grapes. Local ranchers raise cattle, sheep and goats.

Although, we did not get out to explore this island, we still enjoyed our day. We stood on our balcony for sail away. I was a little sad this was our last port, but then God said, watch this! Suddenly, right off our balcony, dolphins everywhere. More than we could count! As if they were giving us an escort out into the deep waters of the Atlantic to start our journey home. It was unbelievable!!! I took over 4 minutes of video and they were still everywhere. What a great ending to this day. God is good!

Tonight we started our transatlantic crossing. We have a lovely 7 days to enjoy this great ocean, visit with friends that we have made and pack. O yea, pack. We unpacked 4 months ago and now it’s time to remember how it all fits, like a puzzle, back in the luggage.
What a fabulous journey we have had. Can’t believe it’s coming to a close…but, looking forward to our next adventure! Wonder what it will be?

Thanks again for taking us all along with you. It’s been a great adventure to read your Commentary.
Welcome home!!
